Beagles are great pets. This very old breed has been on this planet for about a thousand years or maybe longer. A good sense of smell that was actually used in hunting characterizes the breed.

Beagles Breeders - Name of the Breed

The derivation of the breed name is from a Celtic word "beag" which stands for "small." As the breed was rather small, it was "of little value" to the Celts although that did not influence the popularity of the breed. The breed distributed all over the world. By the end of the 19th century, America became acquainted with the Beagle. They now enjoy the reputation of a country with a great number of Beagle lovers.

Original function: hunting rabbits.

Height: 13-15 inches.
Weight: 18-30 pounds.
Life span: 12-17 years, considered mature by the time they are 2 to 4 years.

Beagles Breeders - Varieties of the Breed

According to AKC, there are two varieties of Beagles. The AKC divides the dogs into two groups according to the height. These two varieties are the dogs that are 13 and 15-inch high. The dogs of the first 13-inch high group standard weigh about 18 pounds. Beagles of the 15-inch high group weigh about 30 pounds.
