Beagle Dogs

Beagle Dogs are classified as scent hounds. They were originally bred for hunting small game, but nowadays they are used mostly as pets and therapy dogs. This breed attracts people by its intelligence, cute appearance and friendly personality. Beagles are small and compact dogs. According to the breed standard, the height of the Beagle varies from 13 to 15 inches at the withers; the common weight of these dogs is 18-30 pounds. It’s a shorthaired breed. The ears of the Beagle Dogs are long, with rounded tips. The eyes are dark brown, with a soft and intelligent expression. The head of the Beagle is rectangular; the skull is slightly domed. The common coat patterns are bi-color (red and white, tan and white) and tri-color (black, tan, and white.) Feet and the tip of the tail of the Beagle should be white to make it easy for a hunter to follow the dog during the hunt.

It’s typical of the Beagle Dogs to love companionship of humans or animals. Bred to work in packs, these dogs are very communicative and playful. These dogs should not be left alone in a small apartment, but a well-secured yard can provide Beagles with things to investigate. A Beagle left alone tends to howl and bark, which will annoy the neighbors. These small dogs are very hardy and able to live outdoors, if provided with shelter. These independent dogs may seem disobedient, as they prefer stimulating activities rather than drill. If the owner has enough patience and experience, the Beagle becomes cooperative and well-behaved. Even a very obedient Beagle should not be taken for a walk without a leash, because the hunting instincts of these dogs make them chase moving objects and follow interesting smells.

There are no dogs suited for all purposes. Beagle Dogs make tolerant pets and playing companions, but they are unable to guard the house and stop intruders. Beagles cannot be trusted with hamsters, guinea pigs, and other small pets. Bringing a Beagle to the country and leaving it in the yard with the poultry or rabbits is not the best idea.

If a Beagle lives an active life, it has a chance to stay healthy and live up to its late teens. Without enough physical and mental stimulation, Beagles grow fat and uninterested. Some bloodlines of the breed are prone to glaucoma, cataracts, deafness, hemophilia, diabetes and joint problems. Only reputable and experienced breeders can guarantee good health of their Beagle Dogs.
