Their alertness makes these hounds good watch dogs, but they are not protective and will most likely play with an intruder. Belonging to the group of hounds, these sturdy little dogs are considered one of the smallest hunting breeds. As the history goes, the Roman times are sometimes called the period when the breed was developed. The dogs were specially bred to kill the rabbit and hare. These active hounds do require a great deal of vigorous exercise. They have a strong hunting instinct, and should not be let off lead. It is in the dog’s nature to take and follow the scent. Therefore, training can be a challenge. It is a good idea to use the dog’s hunting instincts at field trials. Some owners say there is a problem of excessive barking in the breed.
